Sacred Sites

Management & Policy I Themes

Sacred sites are focal points of cultural and spiritual values where the human ecosystem relationships have lead to the preservation biodiversity and sustainable practices of nature conservation. Yet, this sacred earth is under treat. Increasing development pressures at local and regional scales have accumulated into global trends. All around the world sacred sites and their guardians now face challenges of development, societal transformation and uncertainties such as climate change. CVNI works with local people in order to develop equitable and culturally appropriate solutions to meet such challenges in the face of nature conservation and biodiversity protection. Some of CVNI’s work on Sacred Sites:

  • Empower and enable local people with continued or renewed management and protection of their sacred sites,
  • Community consultation for and field testing of the IUCN-UNESCO Guidelines for the management of sacred natural sites
  • Development of management practices and conservation strategies which are cognizant of cultural and spiritual values
  • Developing bio-cultural synergies based on sacred sites and spiritual values with arts and (environmental) education.
  • Improve understanding on cultural and spiritual values attached sacred sites through action research.
  • Influence policy making processes through providing adequate information on the importance of sacred sites for the conservation of biodiversity and human well being.
  • Develop an International Initiative on Sacred Natural Sites
