Sacred Land Film Project

The Sacred Land Film Project

Coordination:  Toby McLeod, Sacred Land Film Project, U.S.A.

Status: There is ongoing collaboration between the Scared Land Film Project and CSVPA. The Sacred Land Film Project is currently producing a series of documentaries on sacred sites around the world and has contributed to the IUCN UNESCO Guidelines for the management of sacred natural sites.

Description:

The Sacred Land Film Project of the California-based Earth Island Institute produced and distributed a major film, In the Light of Reverence (2001), on the situation of three sacred natural sites in the U.S.  The film has been an important tool in educating the public about the plight of sacred natural sites, and their Native American caretakers.  The Sacred Land Film Project is now developing a major four-part film series on the plight of important sacred natural sites around the world, again as a tool for public education.

A film project of this nature requires independence in order to assure editorial control and institutional freedom.  At the same time, the Task Force provides a source of information and contacts that would be valuable to the Sacred Land Film Project, and the resulting film will be a major educational tool for members of the Task Force in their own work.  Thus, there are important advantages in developing a cooperative relationship between the film project and the Task Force.

Deliverables:

  • Development of a memorandum of understanding between the Task Force and the Sacred Land Film Project.
  • Task Force Members assist the film project in identifying relevant sites, and establishing personal and institutional contacts.
