March 2009 - 'De econoom is niet hulpeloos' [= The economist isn't helpless] : Martijn van der Heide, Wim Heijman en Marleen Schouten, three researchers involved in SELS research projects, have written an article in the Dutch Newspaper NRC on the possibilities economists have to tackle the current economic crisis, which according to them shows similarities to the way in which ecosystems respond to disturbances. 3 June 2008 - 'Moving to an Ecological Economy' How can ecology, not economics, drive the valuing of biodiversity and our natural resources?  With continuing loss of biodiversity, over use of natural resources, climate change, growing urbanisation, food shortages, increasing fuel prices, how do we measure and take account of the true value of biodiversity.  What are the ecological indicators that can be used to do this?  How can they be measured by ecological practioners in the same way that financial indicators are assessed by auditors?  What is the monitoring required? 11 January 2008 - The SELS team held a workshop during the afternoon session of the  KB1 Congress 2008. The workshop provided an overview of the current activities of the ‘Speerpunt’ and presented a number of proposals for (co)funding by SELS in 2008. January 2008 - World Conservation is the magazine of the World Conservation Union (IUCN). The most recent issue of January 2008 is titled 'A world without biodiversity?'. In the run-up to the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Barcelona, with its theme A Diverse and Sustainable World, the latest issue of World Conservation is going ‘back to basics’. Diversity—biological as well as social, linguistic and cultural diversity—is the lifeblood of sustainable development and human welfare.
