Summary
This research focuses on the development of a unique database with landscape preferences and personalized maps that can be used for scientific research. This database is unique in Europe; there is no European database with landscape preferences of Europeans. This database can be used as a monitoring tool. Because both Western and Eastern European countries are included, insight is given in preferences of both populations.
Traditionally landscape preferences are examined by expensive surveys. On European level this would be extremely costly. In additions participation of citizens in surveys is declining. This research departs from a different research technique, with which a broader part of the population can be reached. In this technique no questions are asked. By actively participating in a interactive website, participants do not think they are taking part in a survey. Experiences with the Dutch website www.daarmoetikzijn.nl (translation: my place to be) show that specific groups that do not participate in the traditional methods of surveying, do so with this new method, especially the youth. In other words, this technique produces data at relatively low costs and this data can by apply on every regional scale.
In 2008 the research questions are:
- To which extend can the database of www.daarmoetikzijn.nl be used in the RITA research project in the province of Noord-Brabant of the Netherlands?
Can this pilot project be used as a case study to attract European partners to write a proposal for European funding for a European version of www.daarmoetikzijn.nl.
